How Personal Should You Make Your Application?

A Guest Blog by James Maynard

College application: Common Application: How Personal Should You Make Your Application? There are two ways of playing a college application. One way is to look as professional as possible. Students who do this take no chances and don’t allow themselves any room to make mistakes. For some colleges, like business schools, filling out an application like this might be a wise choice. For many schools, however, this may not be your best option. Your best bet may be to reach for your full potential, even if that means taking chances.

When colleges are looking over applications, many will have thousands of students looking for admission. One of your goals should be to make your application stand out from the rest of the pile. One of the best ways to do this is by personalizing your application. The essays and personal statement are the easiest places to let your personality shine. Use a touch of humor in your essay as well – but don’t overdo it.

Try your best to engage the reader with a story.

Anyone can recite a list of accomplishments. What you want to do is to excite the person in admissions who is reading your work. There is nothing worse than a dull, boring essay.

The way you approach your essay questions will show more than what can be revealed just from the words. It will also show how you approach assignments.

By taking your time, you will be able to show off your personality. This can work wonders in helping you get into the school of your choice!
